Prepare for a meeting with your mentor

On average, a mentor and a mentee meet monthly, which means that every minute of these meetings is precious time that must be optimized. Therefore, to maximize the positive effects of this relationship, it is important to have a good method of organizing the meetings as well as good time management.

Suggested time allocation for a one-hour mentoring meeting:

  • First 5-8 minutes: Personal contact. What is going on? Follow-up and goals of the meeting.
  • Next 15-20 minutes: Focus on “hot” topics, a task at hand, a difficult relationship, a project review, a particular problem, etc.
  • Next 10-25 minutes: Discuss medium and longer term goals and priorities.
  • Last 5-6 minutes: Review the meeting. Were our goals met? Was it satisfactory for both the mentor and mentee? Determine the follow-up to be done by each of us. For this last step, you can refer to our Mentoring relationship follow-up tool, which will allow you to structure your assessments and observe the progress made during the meetings.

Other tips for preparing your meeting:

  • Prepare a list of questions or topics before each meeting.
  • After each meeting, identify the things you learned and imagine how you will apply them;
