The heart of the mentoring relationship

The 4 fundamental stages of the mentoring relationship are the beginning of the relationship, the development of the relationship, the heart of the relationship and the end of the relationship. After getting to know your mentor/mentee and building mutual trust, you enter the development and heart of the relationship. These are made up of collaboration and action. In this guide, Elo explains in detail the elements that make up these stages.

The goal at this stage is to develop the relationship through listening, sharing the mentor’s experience, and challenging the mentee.

Here's how the mentor can help the mentee during this stage:

  • He shares his experience in similar situations to provoke reflection.
  • He questions the mentee to deepen, to clarify, to challenge his ideas.
  • He anticipates needs and identifies other possible solutions to explore.
  • They help identify the best actions and strategies to achieve their mentee’s goals.
  • He expands his mentee’s network through his own relationships.
  • He proposes challenges to his mentee.
At this stage, the mentor takes the mentee out of his comfort zone. They ask questions and get them to think about the different options that will allow them to reach their goals. He also pushes him to take action through personalized challenges and gives him feedback. In short, the mentee discovers and develops new skills, strategies and solutions.
